think of ua:aos as more like a board game than a wargame. there are a lot of different game modes, and each plays out in a variety of ways. there are six different scenarios, each with a different set of objectives. the player is given a choice of one of 12 roles, with a set of different commands and abilities.
there’s the traditional campaign mode, but you’ll also have the chance to play a couple of new modes in early access – one of which is a new skirmish generator that lets you fight dozens of battles at once. there’s also a new team skirmish mode that lets you fight with two teams – and that’s a super new idea.
there’s also a multiplayer mode in the game that can be accessed from the main menu. it seems to function a little like team fortress 2 in that it involves a number of teams – one for each of the four main countries – fighting each other to the death. there’s a list of servers to choose from, but when you find a server that allows steam users to play it, you can double-click on the host to join. a few people have written about this multiplayer mode, but it still seems that nobody has yet managed to get it to work, so watch out for updates.

it’s cheap too – the base game (without expansion packs) is available from steam for just £13.99, and the steam dlc packs are available individually or as part of a season pass. however, i’d suggest taking a look at the game’s trailer first, as you can see that some of the game’s best missions are immediately recognisable from this. i can understand why the developers might want to conceal its best features, but what they’re hiding is nothing compared to what you’ll get for the low price of admission.
