So far, I have started with tether training. This is a simple, but effective method of reducing anxiety. The idea of tether training is to have the puppy remain indoors where they are safe. Then, as the puppy’s owner, you approach the puppy who is in the tether area and make little noises as if you are still making noises to the puppy in the tether area. This can be done in the house and outdoors. The association is positive, so your puppy feels the tether exercise as positive. You will then begin the landing and stay method. The first step is when the puppy lands near you. You will place yourself in a place where the puppy feels secure such as a crate or on the floor. Now you make little noises, such as “Good boy” or “Sit!” This is your first exposure. The second exposure is a full room away. The time between exposures varies. For most puppies, it is not critical how long your exposure is between exposures. The goal is that you are not allowing your puppy to fear you. The third and final step is to have your puppy sit in the tether area. Then, the tether is removed and the puppy is given verbal praise for staying. This method works with many dog fears. For example, if a puppy is afraid of thunder, we would utilize this method to help the puppy overcome that fear.
The biggest distinction in the fear-prevention methods is that I am concerned about more than just reducing the fear. I am concerned about improving the dog’s ability to be calm in stressful situations. For example, one thing that a highly reactive dog may learn from a flight is to remain calm in a flight. Or, one of the things that a fear-prone dog may learn from a urine or defecation issue is that defecation is something we can handle just like a flight. I also teach the dog that staying in the crate or tether area while I am calm is a good thing. (One of the most common fears is the fear of being alone.) I teach the dog that the crate or tether is safe and I give them toys to play with, knowing that if the dog responds, they are only responding to positive stimuli. This method works by giving the dog positive stimuli and rewards to see if the dog will continue to respond to stimuli. If the dog behaves negatively, then it is safe to offer things such as a toy or a treat only after the dog makes the appropriate response.
The first step in successfully addressing a fear issue is defining what fear is. Fear in a puppy, dog, or cat is a normal (i.e. protective) response to a feared stimulus. When a puppy is exposed to something that frightens it, it then fears that thing, or stimulus. Some stimuli are dangerous and things can become fearful stimuli once in a dog’s past, such as having a bully dog fight in their backyard, running away from a car, or being teased at a public event. Other stimuli are not dangerous, such as having a puppy play with one of the family cats, or playing fetch with a ball. It may seem like one has a fear response to either stimulus, but they are both safe in their own way.
If you would like to avoid placing a puppy at risk, you should first identify what is causing your puppy to be afraid. It is normal for a puppy to be afraid of loud noises, people, dogs, or strange situations. What is causing the fear response may be obvious or it may not be. For example, you may notice that your puppy is afraid of the doorbell ringing and when you go to answer it, he/she runs out of the room. This would indicate that the sound of the doorbell is a fearful stimulus.
Exposing a puppy to fearful stimuli does not have to be traumatic for the puppy to be afraid of them. What is important is that you notice when the fear has occurred. Fear occurs when your puppy is stressed and begins to run away. Learn to identify the signs of stress and fear to help avoid exposing your puppy to fearful stimuli. Remember that once you notice the early signs of stress or fear, it is possible to help your puppy develop a healthy association between stimuli and non-threatening consequences. The next section will help you learn to identify these signs and offer solutions to help your puppy learn a healthy fear association.
