i tried to download the newest patch, and after extracting the files in the sims 4 original folder, i had a second error saying that it couldn’t find the sims 2 game (that i didnt extract before) and it wanted to download it again, but didn’t work. so i closed the program and tried to run it again, got the same error as before. i really need help with this. i cant play the game at all.

indeed it can be unlocked. dlunlocker is a free utility. if you already have the original sims 2 and unlocker, then just download the dlunlocker application. unzip it somewhere you like (i put it in my sims 4 folder). then you just double-click it and click the “unlock” button.
the game is technically not free but it does contain a community-created mod called “unlocker for the sims 2 ultimate collection”. it allows you to download the unlocker, and then “unlock” and install the expansion pack for free. i have just tested it and it works perfectly. i have tested it on mac os x 10.7.5 and windows xp. give it a try!
i have the exact same issue as the person who posted this question. i went ahead and tried the unzipit as well and i got the same error as you. the only reason i downloaded the unzipit is because the unzipit website says that it will fix my sims 4 game. it didn’t. i can’t even open the game anymore. i can’t even run the game on a virtual box. i’m using a mac. i have the exact same situation you did. the game is not even able to start up. i do not have any installed dlc.
