If there was a flaw in the game, it was that thing that happened during the early 80s between Gang Starr and A Tribe Called Quest. The game had been shaken up by new-jack swingers like A&Y and The Flex.
The second half of What Happened is where the album truly hits its stride. The slow-burning banger Death Race is one of the best songs of Jacka’s career. The track is a virtuoso performance of Jacka’s vivid imaginings and unwavering confidence, infusing all the song with an impenetrable intensity that anyone with a shotgun could envy. “Man, you know I ’bout to live my life n the big screen, in the light,” he raps. “If you want death race, I ’bout to give death race.” If youre not satisfied, theres more where that came from. Thats a statement that could be true of many rap albums, but its not something that can really be measured in stars or CD sales. (10/10)
Finally, we have the uncompromisingly aggressive and remorseless Dissappoint. On this track, the Jacka isn’t rapping or singing or rapping again. Its voice is a wall of noise. Throughout the song, he flings insults at everyone he dislikes. “I won’t stop rapping till I bust a hard line/I’m not just a star, I’m a perfect 10.” The track also features a noteworthy guest appearance from producer and DJ Large. The messages and sound of Dissappoint is such a stark contrast to the laid-back What Happened that it makes the album an unexpected musical novelty among fans of the classic album.
Raps are mysterious things. I like to think that the people who can craft the most elusive ones are the ones who understand the most about what it means to be human. De La Soul understand this both in the form of their approach to the craft, which is sober-eyed and meticulous, and in their own truth-telling, which has been the basis of many of the most important words ever spoken in hip-hop, even in their greatest contradictions. Jacka strives for this, not just in his lyrics but in his overall approach to the situation of a young black male artist, not only in the deep battle between the good and evil within a culture that values neither. As an artist who follows up 2002’s De La Soul Is Dead with The Jacka, and has collaborated with Lupe Fiasco, Diddy, and even college students looking to make rap their major for the day, the achievement is more than just a nice record – it feels like a turning point in hip-hop.
