Millburn, New Jersey

Millburn is an unincorporated community located within Millburn Township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The name of the community is an amalgamation of “Mill” and “Burn,” two rivers in the area. The community is a part of the New York metropolitan area as defined by the U.S. Census for 2010, though there are Millburn border crossings with Union City, New Jersey and Bound Brook, New Jersey.

History
In the early 18th century, Daniel Defoe wrote about the “village of Millyburne” which was “a place where they make samp for beer and brandy”. Defoe described the people of Millyburne as having “very great beer houses, and the best wine in the country”.

In 1756, William Craig, a local farmer, established his own brewery which is first mentioned in literature by John Claudius Loudon in his book “Arts of Agriculture”. Today, the 9th generation Craig family still brews the first beers in New Jersey using the recipes that were created in 1756. The Craig Brewing Company has been located in Millburn since 1905, and has been providing quality, reliable beer to the South Jersey/Northern New Jersey area since. The brewery is still owned and operated by the Craig family. The Craig Brewing Company is the oldest brewery in the United States and produces seven varieties of beer including: Pumpkyn Ale (A specialty brew), Rusty Red Wheat Ale, Cream Ale (a seasonal brew), Amber, Cream Ale (a seasonal brew), Red Ale, and Black & Tan.

The current spelling of the name was changed to Millburn circa 1879, due to an “error” in an early corporate name change.

The volume of Millburn residents increased at a rapid pace beginning in the middle of the 20th century. As such, the New Jersey Department of Transportation designated the area a “major center” in the early 1960s to accommodate increase in traffic. Millburn was the first center in the country to be designated a major traffic center. This designation entailed the construction of new roads and traffic signalization. The designation was reinforced by the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority in the mid 1960s when several events were held
