NORTHEAST — Hundreds of teachers flooded the North East school district this week to get state Education Commissioner Pam Slater a tour of their classrooms.

The teachers also urged her to make changes in the way their salaries are set by the state.

However, while they were protesting, Republican state Rep. Gary Banz was in Independence pushing a different kind of reform: setting up a special court for teachers who are accused of misconduct.

“We were protesting, but the protesters were overlooked,” Banz, a Wea Community College instructor and president of the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Education Association, said Wednesday.

“But our message was heard. In the process, maybe some other issues were seen. Our leaders need to hear us.”

The teachers have been on strike since March 14, when a contract approved by the Board of Education and signed by Gov. Mary Fallin expired. Since then, the teachers have been picketing outside schools, where classes have been canceled.

Their message has been loud, long and mostly peaceful.
