the final volume in chris stefanick’s god’s own junkyard trilogy was released on september 12. in this volume stefanick continues his examination of the habits of the modern-day apostle by focusing on his final topic, the habit of being called. although all seven habits seem to be of equal importance, he concludes that the habit of being called is one of the most important. chris stefanick explains what it means to be called by god for his life and encourages us that following the call will be the most joyous, exciting, and productive of our lives. god’s own junkyard is a wonderful resource in helping us understand the call to a catholic and holy life as a call to service. by discovering our purpose in life and accepting the call, we become called into service. chris stefanick’s advice to us: we become totally dedicated to one of the two great loves of our lives: the love of jesus christ and the love of our neighbor.

my copy of god’s own junkyard’s final volume arrived yesterday, and as soon as i started reading it i knew it was going to be an important theme. as chris says so well, we are always being called into a mission and the things that prevent us from responding to the call are easier to name than describe. for example, when i was reading through chris’s catalog for what he calls his paraliterary universe, he lists “traversing chariots”, “let me find you”, “in the cut,” and “darker than blue,” as the top five books of the genre. in other words, chris is saying that the top books in this universe are all missional books. but you might say, “well of course, chris is a catholic priest…it stands to reason that he would identify the top books of the genre as being about a catholic mission.”
