im definitely trying to do a lot more jazz at this point. its always been a part of my background, like ive been playing alto saxophone and clarinet and flute all my life and i still love listening to music, so its a real desire to explore those styles more and more. i feel like being a flutist is a great avenue to explore those styles more. i want to explore jazz because i know a lot of flutists that play jazz. and im just curious to see what it would be like to play something outside of the classical realm. thats a different challenge.
i feel like im trying to explore that area, which is great, and to be able to come back to my classical roots. because its not really just my classical roots because ive been playing in schools for a long time. ive been playing in jazz festivals and just in the community.
it was a great experience and now im just trying to expand from the flute. because im pretty sure that my highest level instrument is the flute. i love it. its my favorite instrument. its something that i grew up with, and i feel like i can express my inner-most thoughts through that. and so i feel like the flute is a great tool to go to.
i think the first thing i recorded was the acoustic section with the piano, and then i recorded the rhodes part on top of that. i worked in the rhodes for the same reason i worked in the guitars, because it was a very important part of the song. the rhodes has always been my go-to synth for all my basslines. i just love the sound of it. i think thats why i use it a lot in my songwriting. it is a very versatile synth, and i like the sounds it can create.
when i got to her, it was kind of awkward, but i felt comfortable with her and her music, so i wanted to do something with her. it was a very tough decision because i had a lot of people that i really wanted to work with, but ultimately it was this song and i just felt that she just had a song. i felt the chemistry. it was all there and she was coming to me on her own.
i think the song itself is very light-hearted. i think it makes people want to smile and dance and move around. my favorite thing about the song is how fresh it is. the parts that you don’t expect are the ones that will make people go ooh. for example, the bridge. its the bridge where it makes the song go from, like, i’m going to the party, to, like, i’ve gotta get the party started. and it goes back there, and it gets kind of intense. that’s what i love about it.
in the video, we came up with that ooh and it felt so good. i think one of the video directors told me that he was like, i want it to be like an introduction to the song. that’s what he was going for. they shot it a couple of times and they didn’t really know what to do, so i sat down with them and i listened to it and i was like, ooh, i can be the host. i made the backdrop and i turned it into a lounge. that was the direction we went with it. i think we nailed it.
so, i used a korg m1 mixer for the verse and chorus. the verse was set up so i could adjust the volume with the faders on the board. i usually then set up the chorus using the one on top of it and just adjust the volume there. the song starts with just drums at the beginning.
