As a gamer, it is often difficult to know which games in a series will return for a second instalment. So when I came across the brief for the first title in the Many Misfortunes series, I immediately jumped on it with both feet and was immediately excited with what is on offer. It’s such a refreshing approach to the genre, but it’s no easy task to make a quality fantasy story and bring it to life.
I wanted to develop a narrative experience where the player felt immersed into an incredible world, but this time a world we knew was not real. The many misfortunes of Kyran Pierre Cadenza the First merges the best aspects of both sides of the genre and gives us a truly fantastic experience that is both accessible yet deep and intelligent.
Choose Your Own Adventure
One of my favourite aspects of the Many Misfortunes is the way it handles the genre of “choose your own adventure”. The interface provides access to all the possibilities of the game in a very accessible way. Whenever an event occurs that the bard is invited to narrate, he or she can choose the direction of the story, choosing from a branching set of text-based events. These are presented in a page-turning, illustrated style that puts them at the core of the game.
When you are at the scene of an event, the bard will look down at a number of buttons on the controller and then press the right button to choose which path to follow. This could be a choice of whether or not to perform a magic spell, to interact with a pivotal moment in the story or any number of other decisions that are made along the way.
Although the interface is fully functional, it is elegantly presented on your television through an immersive 3D environment and cinematic presentation. There are no interfaces to speak of in the Sword sequence, which is where the story is told in a page-turning, illustrated style. Everything that happens on the page is visually reflected in your 3D surroundings.
The Map

From the day I first stepped foot into Kyran Pierre Cadenza the First, I was captivated by the level of detail, not only on the 3D environments, but also by the way the bard was portrayed within the game. The interface also had a feeling of familiarity that seemed to stem from the classic nature of the Choose Your Own Adventure format.
As the player navigates through their adventure, they will encounter detailed 3D environments with hidden

Inspired by the folklore of the ancient Koreans and grounded in an unprecedented experience, Araha: Curse of Yieun Island brings a profoundly unique story to the puzzle genre. The game puts players in the role of “Boy”, a young man who must survive in a cursed island and find his sister who has disappeared. As the Boy, player must make use of his sharp senses to navigate the deceptively challenging environments and fight the spirits from the island.
With elements of the supernatural included, the Boy will encounter various ghosts on the way, attempting to exorcise them or escape out of the island. The Boy must locate all necessary tools and equipment in order to gain an advantage over the ever-growing number of spirits.

The Boy is main protagonist. He is a college student searching for a missing girl.
He took a leave of the school without permission, went to the Island with his sister Yieun. In the island, he lost his sister at first and got injured. On the way back home, he got lost in the mountainside and falls into the cemetary.
When he woke up, he found out that his body is soaking wet.
He found his sister’s corpse with a bunch of old papers.
Now he is looking for the best way to escape.

    Gameplay

The Boy walks, talks, fights, and solves puzzles while exploring through the six areas of Yieun Island. In order to stay alive, the Boy must make sure that he has adequate resources, and keep up the energy while fighting ghosts. The Boy uses his flashlight, a notebook, and a knife to help him move through the game, and solve the puzzles in each area.

When the Boy encounters a spirit, the ghost will lash out at the Boy and try to lure him away from his sister’s corpse. If the ghost succeeds, the Boy is denied some of his energy and sometimes even flee. Otherwise, the Boy can either fight the spirit to keep the spirit at bay or flee from the ghost, using his flashlight. If a ghost is too strong, the Boy will faint in the attempt to escape. The Boy can also simply run from a ghost, which also exhausts some of the Boy’s stamina. Once the Boy is faint, he loses a percentage of his energy, and takes damage. If he gets too low on energy, he will faint.

To fight the spirits, the Boy has to use his knife, his
