WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans blasted President Barack Obama for his health care law Monday, warning that newly expanded requirements could leave millions of Americans uninsured — even when Republicans control both Congress and the White House and have repeatedly declared their intention to repeal the law.

House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio and top Republican lawmakers said Obama has not been willing to address their complaints. That’s because he wants to add nearly $1 trillion to the debt over 10 years and does not accept any changes to the law, they said.

At issue are stricter coverage requirements Obama’s law imposed on insurers.

Requiring the companies to cover specified services, such as emergency services and hospitalization, is intended to curb excessive use of those benefits, which drive up insurance premiums. Obama’s law requires insurers to cover 10 essential health benefits, such as maternity care, routine doctor visits, prescription drugs and mental health treatment.

Until now, most insurers were required to cover only those services that many Republican lawmakers consider “essential.”

That history dates back to Republican President George W. Bush’s healthcare overhaul. Congress under then-Republican President George W. Bush’s passed legislation that eventually led to the Affordable Care Act.
