Having followed the contemporary hip-hop world for almost 10 years now,Born Sinner is ultimately a disappointing set of songs. A concept album about Cole’s own life, the 11-track project follows a familiar arc, with particular emphasis on Cole’s mother, his relationship with God, and the sacrifices he’s made to become the man he is today. He details his successes and efforts — Cole even gives a shoutout to the track No Diggity — and sometimes overstates his case, painting himself as the son of a legend.

Theres a new outspoken confidence, which finds Cole confronting not just society at large but also rap peers and competitors. On Miss America, he calls out rapper/pastor Mase for driving a fancy car while his congregation struggles. Born Sinners opening track (Cole wants the titles to remain as much of a secret as possible until release) features a jab at Trinidad James and a dramatic backdrop of live strings and a choir. Album highlight Let Nas Down is about Coles reaction to hearing that Nas didnt like the commercial leanings of Work Out from Cole World. Its a self-effacing case of rap-idol worship reminiscent of Wests 2007 love letter to Jay-Z, Big Brother. You made You Owe Me, dog, how could you not relate Cole raps over a bluesy sax sample, referring to Nas glossy 2000 single.

At its best,Born Sinner, showcases J. Cole’s overall musicality, pairing his ability as a lyricist with a more broadly developedproductionpalette. In a heat, he can rattle off some fierce rejoinders (See: Niggaz Know). But several releases deep into Cole’s growing catalogue, we haven’t been delivered the savior that Jay-Z’s A Star is Born seemed to anoint. (The latter’s current indifference to Cole has become so pronounced that Cole has to keep squashing beef rumors.) Though much has been made of Cole’s decision to bump upBorn Sinner‘s release to the same day as Kanye’sYeezus, Cole is popular to a degree that suggests his sales will be competitive with Kanye’sdivisive-by-design Yeezus. That popularity, which has grown through a handful of big singles, is a testament to the fans who’ve been with him since his come up, fans rewarded with a recent string of $1 Dollar and a Dream performances taking place this week. ButBorn Sinner didn’t turn out to be a reward in itself.
