“for some people it’s just a nice abstraction layer that lets one program connect to the serial port and communicate with the serial port device. for the vast majority of people though, the actual serial port driver is kind of a black box. it’s really not something i’d recommend connecting up (like ten or one hundred times), it’s really not something that can be easily debugged, it’s not something you should have to give up control over to someone else. the problems with using the serial port that i see over and over are.
from the above, it seems that a number of people just don’t get it. i’m not a big fan of kde’s implementation of 3 serial ports, but that seems to make sense to me – more than one serial port is problematic and i don’t need two. i only have a single such device on my computer and it works just fine.
using the interface is error prone for one thing. if you don’t know what you’re doing, all the while trying to interact with the service provider, what are the chances of it actually talking to the service provider? oh, there’s a few problems with that – if the connection is bad, or if the service provider is too busy, it might never work. and you’re gonna spend your time trying to figure out why it doesn’t work – if it works at all. also, i’m presuming you’re only using this to transmit data.
i have the same symptom. i bought it a month ago and it recently started bugging out. i bought a different computer and installed the franson and the serial does not recognize on that computer. it used to work fine with my laptop. i would say, use tmux to run vim in the background.
