For a brief moment it felt as though I had received a forward pass. Completely over-revved, the game was ripping through the air and out of reach. The player next to me barely moved. Had I caught the ball on the first pass, I’m confident it could have been scored within the first couple of seconds.

FIFA 22 is a complete simulation at its heart, but it also borrows from real-world football with a motion-based approach called HyperMotion. I’ve been playing with the game for about six hours now and have explored the first few thirds of the game, but it still feels like I’m only scratching the surface.

Most of this will come with a lot of time spent walking around the beautiful Gulf, which is still in full force as I’m writing this. There’s a definite sense of discovery to FIFA 22’s new approach to gameplay, but it’s one that complements all of its new elements. The goal of the game is to conquer, and in the case of FIFA, that means choosing your method and sticking to it.

The first step is almost too simple to notice – the first few games or hours of FIFA are spent exploring the menu screens. It’s all slick and modern, and there’s a lot going on. At first I was overwhelmed, but not by how much there was to do, but by the sheer number of options and information available.

FIFA has always been about the choices, and the way in which players control the game. You control the ball and your tactics, and that’s it. But with time, it feels like more choice is being given to players.

For example, at any time in the game you can head-butt an opponent, which could lead to a red card or, in some cases, sent off. That’s a nice introduction to the diverse world of FIFA’s moves, but it’s nowhere near as easy to do as it might seem. The head-butting mechanic is a lot more complex than a simple tap. When I hit a player with my head, it could mean a penalty or it could mean a red card.

Meanwhile, a thunderous thunderbolt of a left-footed shot is included in every section of gameplay. The only time I’ve found myself using it is in the warm-up, which will likely
