From the outset, this film has an aesthetic harmony that is rarely to be found in many other contemporary sci-fi movies. The cinematography is bold, fast, and unusual. I cant quite put my finger on exactly what made the film work so well, but the main elements are definitely strong.
Not many Marvel fans can say their favorite movie is The Incredible Hulk (I say this as a Marvel fan). After all, its a departure from the rest of the MCU. But Logan is like that. Its a direct and skillfully executed confrontation with what makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) so popular, but also like the Hulk, it reboots the whole thing entirely.
Its the latest in a series of provocative, thought-provoking Wolverine movies, where nothing is as simple as it first appears. Out this Friday is Logan, a full-throttle mutant metaphor fueled by raw testosterone. It’s Logan and everyone’s favorite mutant. Throw in an unforeseen yet expected, battle between two rival camps and you’ve got yourself a cinematic can of firecrackers.
I was never a hardcore X-Men fan until I saw Logan. I needed to really know the guy, and the best way to do that was to understand his story. When I first watched the film, I just felt like, this is a guy who got totally screwed over. He got dumped and he had a son he didnt want and he was stuck in a world he didnt know. His only freedom was to pounce on whoever hurt him and just go for it. It made me instantly understand the character. Logan was never a terrible guy. He was a victim. Someone did him wrong, and when he woke up, he had to fight. He just took it too far. Its a great dynamic to see. I also liked that he was the only protagonist that didnt change his look throughout the story. He stayed the same. That was quite refreshing.
The X-Men movie has grown into its own unique subgenre over the last 15 years, one that deserves a new classification, specifically an action-hero movie. And Logan proves that yep, just like the 1980 original, this new genre of superheros is still as rooted in the real as ever. Which, if youre a comic book fan like me, is wonderful news.
Logan works as a weird hybrid of the two: The X-Men movie is essentially a very dark road movie, because both Professor X and Logan have to find and protect a crucial piece of Eden, a place that is not only the analogue to our own planet, but also a metaphorical symbol of racial purity, given the way that perceived racial purity is at the core of this film. The actual X-Men themselves aren’t all that innocent, given that there’s an emotional connection to the fact that Professor X is the one who comes out of the closet, making Logan the one who kills the true villain of the film, given that this is a world in which mutants are persecuted. So no, the Road Movie Movie is not a hokey, low-brow genre, and when you watch Logan, youll feel like youre in the middle of a James Dean/Faulkner existentialist American epic, like youre in a film being written right now, and that some portion of what youre watching is truth.
And make no mistake, this film is a journey, one that encapsulates the whole X-Men series and is a work of staggering art. That said, the road movie genre itself is nothing new. So even though Logan uses the road movie template for its own purposes, I think there are real risks involved that might prevent the film from being beloved or even successful, not just by superhero movie standards, but by pure cinematic standards. The road movie is a subgenre that is already so strong and so prone to redundancy, and the more popular it becomes, the more its niche will become a crutch for filmmakers who seek to make it only for its own sake, and those are the people that Logan is trying to lure in.
