the aforementioned who framed roger rabbit is the perfect touchstone. like the classic robert zemeckis and bob hoskins film, chip ‘n dale: rescue rangers takes a dark movie like noir and turns it into a cartoon. it’s a clever, hilarious, and subversive riff on genre tropes and how to not take yourself seriously.
the only part that doesn’t work is the animation, which seems to have an excess of rough edges and technical imperfections. the most egregious example is the high-pitched squeak that chip and dale make when they’re trying to convince one of the kidnapped toons that the kidnappers’ plot isn’t real. it’s like someone with bad stomach flu making a baby noise that sounds like rick astley made a public service announcement on the dangers of the illegal use of ecstasy.
but the lack of subtlety in the overall production is a minor quibble. chip ‘n dale: rescue rangers plays like a great kids movie, and even better kids’ movie with comedy. the movie’s humor is silly, and therefore approachable, and yet it’s also smart enough to know how to play with the inherent silliness that a toon is.
we know that pirates of the caribbean is pretty silly, so when i watched the trailer for chip n dale: rescue rangers, i knew i was in for a good time. but, there was something else happening. it looked like there was a message in there about how far we’ve come since hollywood, disney, and the rest of the industry tried to dictate what a cartoon was and could be and the new movie put a modern twist on the old story. seeing our funny animal characters talk about why they don’t like pirates of the caribbean, it felt like this movie was right in that spot between great story, and classic comedy.
how many times can we say “duck”? as a symbol of protection, the bird is a perfect mascot for mulaney’s job of protecting chip. however, the film’s final showdown with the title opponent is emblematic of the problems with the new release. chip’s not been given a fighting chance. he’s been knocked out cold, so he can’t help save the day. his spirit is dead, and he’s just a guy sitting in the snow, wondering what happened.
the characters are easy to identify. the toon cops get their fair share of laughs, but there are more story-telling beats in the film than there are laughs. compare that to the original chip ‘n dale: rescue rangers, where the film’s nonstop action makes up for this lack of substance. where the new movie has a confusing plot, rescue rangers has a simple one. chip and dale should team up to save the day. they’re good at that sort of thing.
there are some impressive visual effects and choreography in the film. chip and dale are outfitted in colorful costumes, and the constant parade of cameos of real-life and cartoon celebrities adds to the film’s colorful fantasy-noir feel. the toons’ new forms look more realistic, even though they’re still stylized cartoon characters. they’ve been erased and re-drawn into a different world. but the new version doesn’t have the same charm. the characters are flat and lifeless.
the film’s plot is incredibly basic. an evil businessman (arnett) wants to erase or draw over all of the toons in toon form. chip and dale are forced to work together to thwart his plan. this basic plot is repeated in the first 10 minutes of the film. there’s no mystery. the characters are just there to do what they always do. if the film wants to show off the cartoon characters, then it should have given the toons some personality. instead, the characters are just generic.
