that the film is about maharanee padmavati who fell in love with an enemy of her family, an enemy who tormented her as a means to assert dominance of her kingdom is a major theme of the film. unfortunately, the film misrepresents the cultural context of the historical events and constructs a tale where the central woman has nothing to do with any of it. consequently, maharanee loses her freedom, her family loses, her people lose, and the real bloodshed of real historical figures never comes into play. both her story and the historical one are framed as an enactment of the same romantic love rather than representing a character who has anything to do with the time and place of the historical events. rather than challenging this rapey idea, it furthered to reinforce and normalise pernicious behaviour.
now, with so much going against us, we have less reason to laugh but more reason to cry. in a world with so much hate and intolerance, what difference does it make if a muslim is a bad muslim or a good muslim?
