the first entry in the battlestations series, released in 2005, was a fun and lively action game that offered only a few types of ship and aircraft, making it easy to dip in and out of the campaign. however, the fourth entry in the series, battlestations: pacific, takes a significant step forward in terms of diversity. the gameplay remains familiar enough, with a focus on strategic control and a healthy dose of action, but the way you control your units has been overhauled. you can still switch units on the fly using the d pad, but now you’ll have to engage specific controls to activate certain units, including a waypoint system that allows you to set up waypoints for your aircraft and then call them up from the deck, as well as a set of commands for your units that lets you send a sub or aircraft torpedoing at a beach. new equipment and weapons have been added to the mix, including anti-aircraft guns and torpedoes, which means that you’ll need to be more proactive in your strategy. as you complete missions, you’ll have the option to spend credits to unlock additional ships, aircraft, and equipment. if you’re not careful, you’ll end up playing much longer than you had planned, because you’ll be constantly adding new units to your arsenal. if you purchase all the upgrades and equipment that’s available, the game will be over in about five hours, which is longer than the time it takes to play the campaign missions.
