DAHA, Nigeria (AP) — The Niger Delta region of Nigeria has launched a ceremony at sea to bury the body of a Nigerian sailor whose death was a scandal in Japan.
President Goodluck Jonathan ordered the burial for the late Robert Francis Ayeni, who died on May 16 in Sasebo, a naval port in Nagasaki Prefecture that is home to an advanced U.S. Navy squadron.
The government said in a statement Friday that Ayeni’s body was brought home from Japan, where it remained until the burial ceremony at sea.
The former child soldier has been hailed as a hero in Nigeria for his courageous battle to survive when his ship capsized in the English Channel in 2009.
Ayeni was well known in Nigeria and was one of the first survivors to be interviewed by a Nigerian media after the ship sank.
The government and Ayeni’s family received criticism in Nigeria for waiting so long to bring the body home. Ayeni’s widow and three young children from a previous marriage also criticized the government for not ordering a more public ceremony.
