instead, ashes cricket 2009 is your stereotypical, leisurely multi-platform cricket experience. and though it’s so certain to be an engaging, inclusive gaming experience if it was made with pc in mind, the fact that it’s been made for consoles from the start makes the game a fair port but a frustrating port at that. the game is accessible, no doubt, but it still needs to be enjoyable, and that simply isn’t the case.
ultimately, while ashes cricket 2009 is a solid cricket game, it’s clear it could have been much better if the developers had taken the time to make a great cricket game first. as it stands, we can only recommend it to those who already have the console versions, because if you have a love for the great sport of cricket then the game itself is more than serviceable.
unfortunately, gameplay is where ashes 2009 falters, too. batting runs are trivial at best. once the batting order has been set, there’s little to do until it’s time for tea, and that’s when deliveries start to arrive. this takes place via a simple button press that instantly sends you to bowled overs, which show the bowler and the type of delivery they are going to throw at you, but only just. the idea is to take the ball away from the bowler’s hand before he releases it, but even the most advanced ball-tracking systems can’t reliably do so. it’s no match for the pressure of real cricket, where you have no choice but to try to make things happen, and even as i struggled to create any scoring opportunities, the ball was changing shape and failing to hit the stumps, even when off stump was clearly the spot for it to do so. and when batsmen get on the defensive, balls start to inexplicably curve away without any help from the ball-tracking.
