The crystal structure of the C(2)-symmetric salt of the 1,3-dithiolo[2,3-b]pyridine R,S-ethylidene-2,3-dithiolobenzothiazine S is reported, in which an unusual C(2) conformation is present. The title compound crystallizes with one molecule in the asymmetric unit and the crystal structure determination was assisted by a combination of X-ray crystallographic and NMR data. In the crystal structure, the molecules of the 1,3-dithiolo[2,3-b]pyridines are interlinked via short C-H.O contacts and other weak intermolecular interactions and the ammonium counterions are sandwiched between the neutral molecule and its neighbouring dithiolene system via a number of intramolecular N.H and hydrogen-bonded C-H.O hydrogen bonds. The molecules of the title compound are stacked in columns along the b axis and isolated by intercolumnar weak intermolecular interactions. The thermal expansion study of the title compound revealed that the dithiolene unit presents higher thermal expansion coefficients in comparison with the pyridine moiety. Both the high thermal expansion coefficient of the title compound and the crystal packing behaviour are due to short contact distances between the C(2) dimers, which present a change in conformation. In addition, our results reveal that a dithiolene group with small ring deformations gives higher thermal expansion coefficients for the salt, and hence, it can be concluded that if the dithiolene group is fused with pyridine, which has an unsubstituted pyridine ring, the thermal expansion coefficient decreases significantly.Reduced intermolecular hydrogen bonds in peptidoglycan produced by a novel Streptomyces diacetyl
