Although Photoshop is primarily a vector graphics program, you can also modify images in a raster-based environment if you have a graphics tablet. The reason that you can do this is that you can use tracing and pen tools in Photoshop’s raster editing tools to trace outlines from a graphics tablet, which provides a sharp interface for drawing. The downside is that the drawing tool is raster based, meaning it draws on your graphics file in a rasterized format, which may not be what you intended.

But maybe you want to create a new version of an image in Photoshop that includes the same vector paths that you created in another raster-based program. To do this, open the image you would like to convert to the _Photoshop file format_ (PFF) and select the Edit Paths option. When you have selected the option to open an image in the PFF format, you are prompted to choose an image file format, as shown in Figure 8-3.

Here’s where you need to be more than careful. If you’re a beginner, make sure you stick to the PFF format when importing a file. Anything else can end up eating up space in your hard drive. In Chapter 15, we’ll cover how to save this file format.

Step 1: Welcome to Photoshop Elements

To start the tutorial, open your software. In this tutorial, we use Photoshop Elements on Windows. Other versions include Photoshop Elements 2020 and Photoshop Elements 2019.

When you first open the software, you will be greeted with a welcome screen. The welcome screen gives you some options and settings and a way to return to the main Elements workspace. I recommend that you try out a few of the options before starting with this tutorial as they make Elements easier to use. Click the dark grey arrow to see the options. The options are explained in more detail in later steps.

Click the small arrow on the right-hand side of the welcome screen to return to the main workspace.

Now we have all the settings set, click the main brush icon to open the brush workspace.

Step 2: The Brush workspace

The main brush icon is the first icon on the left in the workspace. This is the icon you use to open the brush workspace.

The brush icon appears in all workspaces.

This tool allows you to paint, erase or modify any image or graphic. You can use a brush, texture or shape, or the Paint Bucket tool.

Click the brush icon to open the brush workspace and select the Brush tool.

Step 3: Opening the Brush workspace

In the Brush workspace, click the tool icon to open the Brush icon.

As you can see, the settings are set to a simple brush called a Round Brush. All the settings are explained in more detail later in the tutorial.

The Brush tool comes up in many different variations. For example, the Brush tool with the Brush options, a smudge brush and a paint bucket.

Testing the Pfam-A model of protein function prediction.
The Pfam-A protein family library is a valuable resource for studying protein function from genomes. In this study, we focused on the Pfam-A model of protein function prediction, and compared it with other protein function prediction models. We evaluated a number of machine learning methods to use for predicting protein function from Pfam-A alignments. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of these methods, compared against various gold standard test sets of protein function, are given for seven protein function prediction models. Our results show that all the algorithms considered can achieve good performance on our data, although it is not possible to compare the performance of different algorithms directly. Overall, we find that most of the classifiers perform well on our data, with each method achieving an overall accuracy in excess of 0.7 on our test set. The accuracy performance for some of the methods is comparable to that of methods that use known protein structure information. We find that the performance on our test set, which is based on the Pfam-A model, is slightly worse than that on a separate test set of computationally generated alignments that is based on other protein function prediction models. In contrast to previous work, we show that it is possible to use a method that uses only Pfam-A alignments to predict the protein function for any sequence without the need for a sequence profile, and with a small number of features.

Launching On a Budget: Crafting a Less Expensive Course

I just came off an idyllic trip to Costa Rica. It was a wonderful way to observe a place, people and culture all at once. For future vacations, I’m going to make sure to allocate a reasonable amount of time to actually learn a little something about the place. I want to experience the culture, see a show, taste the food, put a face on the people, and get a sense of the daily life.

When it comes to course creation, however, it’s easy to forget that most people need to cover a certain level of the curriculum to actually complete a course. I’m going to make sure to build courses that will cover the minimum amount of content required.

Let’s have a look at how this works with one of my favorite photography courses, and how the process took shape.

Starting with the Course

I decided that the perfect course would tell a general story of how to photograph a very specific location on earth. I had spent years studying the world around me, looking for that one place that I could experience and perhaps even write about for my readers. After a few trips, here in Costa Rica, I finally saw the Golden Dome of Monteverde and just had to share it with everyone. It was easy to envision the types of photos that one might take while on a mountaintop where the cloudless sky and mountain views take your breath away, and you can almost smell the pinole grass in the nearby meadows.

The course sounded like fun, and best of all, it was the perfect excuse to take a vacation day and hike up a mountain. With just the right camera equipment in tow, and a talented, dedicated crew, we would bring a new dimension to photography.

How the Course was Born

In short, here’s how it came to pass:

#1. The location in Costa Rica. I have a list of locations that I’ve researched and studied. My first choice was the Monteverde Cloud Forest. I used Google Maps to obtain images of the topography and surroundings. Doing so, it became immediately obvious that the surrounding was an unforgiving landscape of steep cliffs and daunting high mountain peaks.

#2. Planning. Early in the project, my team and I spent hours brainstorming about where to take photos. Some of the ideas were downright ridiculous, even by my
