Vectoring

Vectoring is a series of two or more layers arranged to make an image seem as if it’s only one. Vectors are made by tracing an object, such as a strand of hair or a crack in a wall, and then giving it a path. You can insert these path-traced objects into an image as if they’re an image. Because they’re their own layer — and you can modify a path as well as everything else on a layer — they look and behave like other images you may already have on a single layer.

By using vectors in Photoshop, you are able to remove the step of tracing the path; you can even make some of your image path-based.

For example, a star can be created by tracing around a circle filled with one or more stars. You can use these star-filled circles to draw a beautiful fern (pictured in Figure 13-1), or you can draw a fern yourself. The fern can be filled, and then you can apply texture or any pattern you like to the fern.

In Figure 13-2, I’ve used a fern; however, it’s been filled with the star vector file. In Figure 13-3, I’ve created an empty image of a fern, filled it with the star vector file, and then tweaked the fern to appear almost closed.

Creating a new document

To create a new document from scratch:

Open up Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and select New from the File menu.

Click the Open button.

Click OK when it asks if you want to create a new document.

A new document will be created with Photoshop Elements’ default settings and will be open in the Files panel.

Open a document

To open an existing document:

Select the document you want to open, and press the Ctrl key (Windows), ⌘ key (Mac OS) + o key (Linux).

The document will open in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
