It seems as if Hollywood didn’t know exactly how to market a true epic including a love story or a political ideology. In fact, Kingdom of Heaven is a great example of a general Hollywood mentality: The medieval world is a source of adventure, romance, and exoticism, so why can’t a modern-day Hollywood story have all of that? The audience didn’t want to see a historical epic where the characters didn’t have really defined political beliefs or inner struggles. They wanted to see a great modern-day action movie, and it makes sense when you have a warrior like Scott who’s depicting combat at its most honorable, not its most violent or one-note. Scott would retell the story that the audience wanted to find in a more sophisticated manner, not as some curiosity that’s lost and only worth a look.
Let’s be honest, the high point of the film for most people wasn’t the Crusades. People went with their friends to watch the movie because they wanted to enjoy seeing Brad Pitt jump on horses. It’s a shame that the film didn’t do better because it should have been one of the biggest things to come out of the summer box office besides Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part1. Kingdom of Heaven deserves to be seen as one of the last truly bold attempts to convey complex ideas in cinema over blockbuster-style spectacle. I’m not saying that every movie made from this year onward will be an attempt to make a profound statement, but this year we had a lot of ambition in a lot of movies. Hopefully it’s not watered down in the years to come.
Kingdom of Heaven: The Director’s Cut lets us sit back and watch a movie that impressively and beautifully shows there’s an enormous amount of storytelling to be told and that people are capable of telling it in a way that’s so moving and emotional that it makes everyone around them wish they were in the movie. The Director’s Cut is nearly perfect in its execution and for how many movies live up to that standard.
