locomotion is his latest effort, one that’s taken two years to complete, and it’s a game that bears an uncanny resemblance to sawyer’s own pre-rollercoaster classic transport tycoon. the aim, if not already evident, is to rake in obscene amounts of cash by constructing and maintaining roads, railways and airports and ensuring that people, raw materials and goods are kept chugging along through 40-odd scenarios contained within a century of earth history. graphically, it looks dated.
chris sawyer’s locomotion is a modification of an earlier game, rollercoaster tycoon, a game that was developed by chris sawyer and published by microprose in 1996. it was made available for the pc and mac os operating systems. the game was developed using the mystique engine. unfortunately, the game was not very successful, mainly due to the unappealing style and interface. the game was very similar to rollercoaster tycoon but with a more simplistic interface. also, the theme of the game, railroad management, was not a very popular one at the time. as a result, the game only sold 300,000 copies. however, the game was later re-released in 1999, where it was only made available on the pc for the second time. this time the sales were much better as more than a million copies were sold. due to the success of the second version, chris sawyer tried to develop a new game. he came up with a game that is very similar to rollercoaster tycoon but instead of being a theme park game, he came up with a railroad game. he wanted to create a railroad management game, like railroad tycoon but for the pc. the new railroad management game was called chris sawyer’s locomotion. chris sawyer’s locomotion was developed using the mystique engine. the game was released on may 10, 2000, and became a huge success. it sold over six million copies and became the best-selling pc game of that year. unfortunately, chris sawyer did not develop any more games after that. therefore, he did not finish the game that was supposed to be the next one in the railriders series. on may 11, 2000, chris sawyer’s locomotion was released as a shareware for the pc. it was made available for the pc and windows 95. this was the first time that this railroad management game was made available for the pc. chris sawyer’s locomotion was one of the first shareware games for the pc. since then, shareware games for the pc became very popular. later, chris sawyer’s locomotion became a full version for the pc. the game was still shareware at that time. on july 13, 2000, chris sawyer’s locomotion was released for the mac os and windows 95. the game was later released for the mac os on october 26, 2000. sadly, only a few months later, microprose declared bankruptcy and the future of this game was uncertain. however, thanks to the popularity of this game, microprose was able to release chris sawyer’s locomotion for the pc again. this time it was a fully-registered version. unfortunately, the game still could not save the company from bankruptcy. on august 13, 2001, chris sawyer’s locomotion was released for the pc, windows 95 and windows 98. the game was released for the mac os on september 18, 2001.
