Another thing that makes First Blood work as well as it does is that the script is so well-written. The film never once drags in its early scenes and also manages to get very compelling with the character of John Rambo as he comes across as a sympathetic character that one can really see wanting to escape his life but at the same time wants to make a difference. We also see that the character of John Rambo is not completely alone as we see that he has a group of allies who are equally as flawed yet honest and courageous (John Morrron, Jesse Jackson, and a guy named Billy. The reason that I like John Rambo is that he seems very realistic in that he makes several mistakes and he does not seem to have any qualms about admitting these mistakes. While he may be a man on the edge, he does not seem to be an unloving man. In fact, the film seems to imply that he may have loved his step mother and his daughter well. However, the film makes it clear that he was affected by the war in which he was in and it seems that John Rambo wanted to escape that life as quickly as possible. The fact that the film makes this point by having Rambo realize that he has no one but himself to rely on (including his first wife) makes the character more well-rounded than some other heroes as he is not perfect and he not on a pedestal and truly does live in a world of his own. He may be on the edge, but he is not a sideshow.
In the year 1982, a Vietnam war vet named John Rambo travels through the U.S., refusing to take part in the war once again. On his travels he lives with homeless people and witnesses the desecration of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He then gathers his courage and ambushes a policeman, leaving him in a critical condition. He then learns that he has a terminal illness that is caused by Agent Orange, a product of the U.S. war against Vietnam. Rambo decides to leave his life and go to Alaska, where he thought his friend, the one who died from Agent Orange, was buried. He enters the forest and begins killing people. He becomes a symbol of hope and peace to the oppressed America.
