In case you missed my review I’ll post a bit of a summary here. SimCity 2001 was a great game. I hated it at the time because I thought it’s awful, but I’ve actually grown to love the game over time. After all, I dont remember much of it. Its pretty difficult to remember a game if you play it in an empty room with little motivation for depth. So I’m going to reminisce a bit. During these posts, I’ll also be making some judgements about how I felt about the game and how it contributed to some of the effects of digital distribution on the industry.
What is it about SimCity 2001? A city sim, for those who don’t know what a city sim is. Games like SimCity usually have you design your layout for resources, putting out power plant, schools, hospitals, roads, etc, and the systems for each sector typically do themselves. But SimCity’s first iteration did something very different: It let you just build and see. So you would start with a blank map, and can build roads, power plants, squares and houses until you have no place left to build. One week later you’re done. Its awesome, and I was really into it back then. I played for a long time and really got into it.
This was the third game that Maxis had released, after SimCity 2000 and SimCity 2000: Cities and SimCity Construction Set. SimCity Construction Set was mainly the same as 2000, but it also introduced vehicles, and after playing 2000 I was a little disatisfied with the lack of a vehicle editor and the underlying engine. The main problem that 2000 had was that the maps were simply too small to build a decent sized city. SimCity Construction set meant you could build bigger maps, and thats when SimCity 2000’s problems began. Maxis had already tested the waters with the infamous Dr. Boon, before SimCity 2000.
