I recommend you read the whole book from start to finish and supplement it with other books if you feel its missing anything else.If you want to learn more about Chinese characters, I suggest you read Useful Chinese Characters for Learners of Korean by the same authors and Book of Chinese Characters for Learners of Chinese by the same authors. All are published by John Wiley & Sons.
So far Ive found it to be a very helpful book which not only helped me learn the characters but also made me feel confident that I have learnt enough of the characters for the current Chinese-Korean-English dictionary I use to look up the meanings of the words.
What is so great about this book is the use of illustrations, cartoons and photographs. These can be useful in making complex texts more digestible and understandable. Only a few very rare characters areaccompanied by an illustration but when they are, they are detailed and clear. One color page illustrates theChinese Character for article. I think this is a great way to get familiar with the shapes of Chinese characters and how they look when written in hanja.
Within each lesson theres an example sentence (Sometimes a simple one, sometimes a sentence with 2 or more sentences to help remember each stroke) and an answer using those characters. I found this helpful since many of the characters are fairly rare. In the beginning, it was often a given that I would get the answer completely wrong. I would say that a beginners vocabulary would be enough to do all the questions. The book contains vocabulary words that I had never even thought to ask a Korean to use for me (kalguksu comes to mind).
