In addition to the general CPU updates, Claroty discovered a vulnerability within the runtime environment provided for engineering applications. This runtime environment, known as the sandbox, is an application-level wrapper for the execution environment on the PLC that provides protections for the execution of user code. Siemens engineers use the sandbox to run newly developed code that is not yet tested in the full PLC or SIMATIC Safety 7 product to avoid introducing unverified or untested code into the product. In this case, Claroty was able to use a vulnerability in the sandbox to escape the sandbox and obtain read-write memory access.
The attacker can then use the newly gained access to inject shellcode that will execute on the PLC. Siemens is aware of this specific threat and is working on additional mitigation that will prevent this type of exploit.
As a result, this vulnerability affects Siemens SIMATIC PCS 7 PLCs: SIEMENS’ SIMATIC S7-1200 and SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU releases and earlier, and SIEMENS’ SIMATIC S7-1100 and SIMATIC S7-1200 CPU releases and earlier. As of this release, Claroty has only tested and verified against the SIEMENS S7-1500. Claroty’s research and remediation efforts are ongoing to verify vulnerabilities for other S7 CPUs.
