Apple’s MacOS Catalina Delivers A Brand New, Gorgeous Drift’ Screen Saver
While macOS Catalina includes a brand new user interface designed around desktop systems, it’s also primed to make your iPad look even more like a laptop. The new operating system takes inspiration from Windows 10S, a new version of Windows designed to make it easier to use on touchscreen devices. Windows 10S introduces a new taskbar, floating app dock, and a notification center with smaller icons. It’s an interesting concept, but Apple iOS doesn’t need a overhaul; it already makes interacting with files and apps pretty easy. And it continues to work better and faster than Android. When you can use the same operating system on your phone and iPad, why would you choose Android?
The taskbar is still at the top of your screen, the app bar is still to the left, and the dock is at the bottom of the screen, but the way they interact and what’s on them has changed. Apps are now sections of content — like columns, books, or art — that you can swipe through. The app bar is akin to a book shelf — you can add, delete, and rearrange apps. And you can swipe the app bar to see and interact with all of your apps at once. You can still configure the icons on the dock (including a third pane), but you might want to wait for macOS Catalina to come out before you switch that over to the app bar.
While macOS Catalina’s taskbar is still at the top of your screen, the app bar is now more akin to a book shelf, and it floats around the edge of your screen. I can’t wait to try this out on my iMac Pro. I’m also excited to see how Apple will handle the app bar on the iPad, since that might be an area where it can shine. Still, I don’t think macOS will be that useful on the iPad. iOS has proven that it’s superior for things like productivity, and everyone’s already figured out the best way to get that done — on iPhone and iPad alike.
