i have found this a very useful and cost effective program. the software is easy to use with intuitive interface and easy to understand. it is very good to be able to quickly and easily perform finite element analysis on a problem we might have come across. if we were to have a crack of a particular shape we could have a crack growth in minutes rather than days. the crack is not chosen a priori but it grows in the direction of the largest stress at the crack tip. this is a useful feature and means that no special ‘tips’ are needed to be created. the crack is then allowed to grow to a defined length. the length of the crack is then measured for each element in the crack path, so that we can use the results of the analysis to predict the resistance of the component to crack growth or to calculate the stress required for a given damage state.

crack growth in a component may be simulated using one of two modes, namely transient and continuous. in transient crack growth, the crack is advanced by a constant unloading value at each time step. this value is then reset to zero at each time step. in continuous crack growth, the crack is advanced by a non-zero constant unloading value at each time step. this is achieved by simulating load and unloading cycles until the fracture criteria have been exceeded.
