two factors can influence the stress intensity factor (sif) gradient. the first factor is the plastic zone size, which is determined by the amount of damage, or damage equivalent plastic strain, that has occurred within the material. the second factor is the distance from the crack tip to where the plastic zone starts to grow. the plastic zone is an approximation of the zone of plastic deformation at the crack tip. the plastic zone size and the distance from the crack tip to where the plastic zone starts to grow are controlled by the applied load.
the distance from the crack tip where the plastic zone starts to grow is referred to as the critical distance. for homogeneous and isotropic materials, the critical distance is proportional to the square root of the applied load. for non-homogeneous and/or anisotropic materials, the critical distance may be a function of the direction of the plastic zone and plane of loading.
