harry continues to drink, which leaves him feeling as if he is trapped in a time loop. harry’s psychiatrist suggests that his drinking may be triggered by matilda’s, and he demands to be treated as such.
matilda’s father, james wormwood, is a baron who takes up residence in the mansion his wife, zinnia, inherited after the divorce. harry is amused that he is not greeted as a baron and that he cannot drink at the mansion because it is harry’s house. wormwood tries to seduce zinnia, but she does not respond. wormwood begins to use his influence to make harry’s life difficult. he convinces harry to hire a prostitute, mimi, to seduce matilda and threaten to report harry to the authorities if he does not comply.
matilda soon realizes that mimi is a corrupt woman and informs her father, who turns her over to the police. matilda ends up in a juvenile detention center. harry hires a private detective, chauncey, to track down matilda’s whereabouts. harry begins to write his memoirs and has a copy delivered to zinnia, but he erases it before zinnia sees it. harry then sends his assistant, mr. vickers, to the prison to visit matilda, but zinnia overhears him talking to her about the memoirs. she then goes to the prison herself. after hearing matilda’s story, she feels guilty for not defending her and for not doing more to prevent harry from marrying mimi. she decides to leave her husband and move in with matilda.
harry and zinnia are left alone, and she finds that her marriage is not as happy as it once was. matilda begins to question her own moral compass and eventually leaves her father and goes to live with her mother in italy, where she is enrolled in a language course. while there, she meets a young man named brillo and is inspired to learn italian and be able to communicate with her mother in the language.
when matilda was 8, she took control of her life. she became self sufficient. she didn’t need her parents. she had her own home, she had a job and she even had her own money. but she didn’t want to be a witch. she just wanted to be normal like everybody else. so she decided to become normal. she went to a special school. and she made the best friends of her life. her name was inez, and she was a fish. her name was anastasia, and she was a goose. they were two wonderful and talented and loving girls. and matilda found her true purpose in life. she would use her powers to help others.
her second and third grade teachers both admired her for her intelligence. the first grade teacher, miss honey, decided to give her a puzzle to solve. this was her first time ever participating in anything and she was excited to see what would happen. she solved the puzzle in less than 10 minutes! the second grade teacher, mr. wormwood, decided to give her a book to read. however, he made it difficult for her to do so. he had hidden it in the book pile behind a large object. matilda waited impatiently to get it out. when she finally did, she put it away without even opening it. her third grade teacher, miss. trunchbull, decided to give her a test. this was her last opportunity to escape. she couldnt fail a test because she didnt even know the material. the test would be on the most basic information about her teachers. she spent all of her time studying. when her mother arrived home from bingo, she discovered matilda reading. she hadnt read a book for a week and hadnt seen her son, mike, for a month. while most parents would be concerned, mrs. wormwood and mr. wormwood had been bingo players for 20 years and were used to it. they decided to send her to bed for the next few days.
