the day before we planned to hike the trail, we happened to drive by a rock climbing area nearby. we hiked to a remote location near the base of the trail with the intention of climbing and rappelling down the fissure wall. we didnt plan to even climb up the side of the fissure, just to get a glimpse of the crack from afar. the trail was easy to find and within minutes we were at the base of the fissure wall. we found we could reach the top of the crack by following a narrow, washed-out trail which was easy to follow. the climb to the top isnt all that difficult (unless youre a very bad climber!) and gave us a glimpse of the full view of the fissure. the top of the crack is a little over 50 feet high; once there, youre treated to a view of the expansive rift valley. at the top, we turned around, rappelled back down to the bottom and went back down the trail. we climbed the side of the fissure wall to get a view of the view. near the top, youll see an area of the wall that is completely missing. we hiked up to that spot, which was some 100-200 feet from the edge of the fissure wall. we saw a huge moutain in the distance. the trail wasnt very difficult, and we made good time, despite not carrying our climbing equipment. we climbed back down the same way we came up, and without any issues, rappelled into the car. it was a beautiful day and we werent disappointed at all.
ground branch is a fissure in fort rock basin, utah. we made the trip out there to explore the fissure with our good friend seth. most of our time was spent just rappelling down the fissure wall. we set up rappels to the bottom of the wall from several spots along the way, and then rappelled all the way to the base of the wall. we climbed up the wall to get a good view of the fissure. we explored the rocks on the wall, and found many nooks and crannies to explore. we rappelled back down, but this time on the opposite side of the fissure. from there, we rappelled back to the base of the wall, and climbed back up the fissure. we made it all the way to the top of the wall, but we found that, due to the steep angle, we couldnt rappel all the way back down. however, we found some interesting places to explore that werent on the official trail. we rappelled back down to the base of the wall, and then walked the base of the wall back down to the trail. it was a beautiful day, and we had an amazing time exploring this hidden gem!
