On the day of a film premiere, the authorities decide to round up the town s most notorious criminals. Among these is a loquacious, quick-witted youth, Renato, who has the dubious distinction of being the only man in town who has actually liked the kidnapped Malena. All he wants is to be able to see her, and to find out what happened to her husband. For Malena, the impending police roundup is only a prelude to the fate she has already suffered, and her only hope lies in the fact that Renato loves her. When the police start rounding up villains, there is a last minute change of plans and Renato seizes the opportunity to proclaim his love to her. But the young lovers have little time to enjoy their blissful moments together before the authorities whisk Malena away from her town. An ambitious young man named Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro) leaves his small town to become an actor in the big city. He is wrong for a number of reasons, but mostly because he is still considered a virgin and does not know how to ride a bicycle, which is the only way to get to his hoped-for career, and his boyfriend is flaunting his macho bragging about a biker gang that they belong to. In order to get away from his town and to get the money he needs to live, he agrees to join a race that will take him to Rome. Yet once he reaches the capital, he finds that he is not ready for the big city, and that he has already fallen for a girl named Malena (Monica Belluci), who is a governess to the Riva family. She agrees to take him in, he also gets a job in a brothel, where he is watched by the police, and is told that Malena is on the run. Renato then races home in order to break the bad news to her that her husband is in trouble, but finds out that Malena is still in Rome. This is just the beginning of the romance, and in their way to Rome, Renato gets an unexpected visit in a biker gang. In the meantime, Renato learns that Malena has a boyfriend in Rome.
