the implementation of the ai feels a little hit-and-miss at the moment, but littman says it’s something they’re still working on getting right. i asked if it’s something they’re going to add in later, and he said that at launch, they’re definitely not going to be taking out a lot of features, but there’ll be improvements to make it more of a challenge. we’ve seen other rtses with a harder ai, but it feels like company of heroes has always been a little easier than that – perhaps because the graphics engine was very demanding, but now that they’re mature, they’ve got the resources, so there’s more potential to improve the ai.
the singleplayer campaign is set in wellington, new zealand and it’s a little extract from the backstory – littman says they’ve never been to wellington before, but they wanted to set a bunch of locations in it, and that’s why you see a lot of buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries that are then used for battle. the other big difference is that it’s on a dynamic battlefield, not one of those static hex maps of starcraft or company of heroes, so when you’re fighting, you’ve got to be aware of where the enemy is, and it’s got more of a forward movement mechanic – you’ve got towers that you can build that give you some defensive capability, but also a siege unit that allows you to move forward on a specific point on the map, and if you move that forward, it’s like a landmine – all units in the vicinity of that landmine are destroyed.
littman says that in singleplayer, you always play as the allies – but when you’re playing in multiplayer, that’s subject to change, and obviously the major difference there is that the allies can win. one of the things that they’re not doing is making the allies invincible, because you want a challenge, so you’re not guaranteed to win, but of course, if the allies win, they win, and the union win in company of heroes 2.
we’ll look at coh2 with a really critical eye and see what we’ve done right, and what we haven’t done right, and we’ll see if we want to make any changes – but at the end of the day, it’s about the community, we trust the community as much as possible, and right now, i think we’ve done everything we need to, and i think they’ve responded well to company of heroes 2; they did a good job of marketing, they did a good job of getting feedback from the community, we’ve got a patch lined up, and we’ve been working on it throughout the last few months.
i think it’s also important to remember that it is a studio, so if we make any changes and we don’t think that they’re going to work or be positive, we can change it later, and by doing that, we increase the odds of the community seeing it and saying “hey, i really like this change, this is cool, this is going to be a great game,” and having that same conversation with you right now.
the full list of features is here, and you can see that it’s a full singleplayer campaign of around 80 hours of gameplay. it’s just the campaign mode on its own, though. the multiplayer mode has been out for some time already – currently there’s a 4v4 mode, but hopefully we’ll be able to add a 2v2 mode in the future. there’s a 6v6 mode planned, too, if people really want it. the basic rules are “the more wins, the better,” and at the moment it’s a point-based system where if you win, you get 2 points – so you can defend a checkpoint if you want to defend it, you can attack an enemy base for 2 points, or you can capture an enemy base and get 4 points. it’s not quite customisable per individual player yet, but there are plans to implement that in the future.
