the ukrainian crisis is about more than just the right of people to determine their future. it is about the principle of democratic sovereignty and a collective security that has led to more than 70 years of peace in europe. as president obama remarked, we must be clear about what this moment of choice means for the future of europe, the united states, and the world. whichever side prevails, the historic opportunity of partnership and collaboration between russia and the united states will be lost.
this marks a historic turning point, because the two heads of state have never met, yet putin and president trump have openly criticized each other, and the latter has called putin a strong leader whom he would have no problem dealing with. whether putin accepts the idea that putin and president trump can find common ground in maintaining global stability is a very different matter.
if anything, the ultimate path that trump takes in terms of his second term as president will be shaped by the 2018 election. as trump has said, he wants to keep his promises of “making america great again,” and a lot of that will depend on what comes out of the campaign in november. if the democrats are strong again, the trump administration will be placed under real pressure. the greens, or a third party will have an increased opportunity to win over swing voters and independents. the rise of the right-wing populists will be a real threat to the two-party system, as nationalism, protectionism and populism come to the fore. the divide is there, and right now, trump has a very strong position to unite them in one direction.
