LEHIGH COUNTY, Pa. — The Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Indiana University Center for Leadership in Prison Education started a new educational exchange program, connecting 14 kindergarten students to prisoners in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

The program, called “Prisoners and Kindergarteners Together,” took place at the prison in Dallas, Pennsylvania. It was first launched in 2016 and it led to the creation of the “Positive Prisoner-to-Kindergarten Connections” curriculum.

One of the prisoners who the students met was 21-year-old Sayvon Rodd, who was sentenced to 3 to 5 years in prison in 2005 for attempted murder and robbery. He’s since served a total of five years and nine months, and has since graduated from high school and gone on to attend college.

“I wanted the opportunity to be part of something like this,” said Rodd, “Because there are so many things I’d like to do but can’t.”

At the end of the day, the students said that the experience left them feeling happy and hopeful about their future.
