Happy Labor Day weekend and welcome to another edition of the Win with Evidence series! Each day, we will be taking a different famous headline and making an attempt to find the hidden logic behind it that offers us a glimpse into the level of intelligence for the author. We start with a representative from the not-so-great side of history:

In the debate last week, Mr. Trump made another point. Despite the dismal performance of the economy under his watch, it is the Democrats who are mainly to blame, he claimed. The buck stops with them: “My base is largely poor to middle class, and I have to tell you, the poverty level is really going up,” he said.

Please. Please pay no attention to what he says when he claims that the “poverty level is going up.” Who really cares? Poverty is a complex social event, and any attempt to “solve” it by fiat in an attempt to increase “poverty” levels is inevitably doomed to failure.

Instead, let us look at what he is actually saying. He is saying that the people whose culture is focused on productivity have risen and that those whose culture is focused on welfare have fallen. That makes sense, because as well-designed as Soviet culture was, it fell apart like a Soviet spaceship at the first sign of failure.

In reality, both groups are doing worse than average. For those of you keeping score, the top fifty percentile of the United States of America in 2017 is at a combined 26% in both income and wealth. In other words, they are at the poverty level but not experiencing it because of Social Security. Their situation is so bleak that they are effectively unable to get a job that will make them anything more than a pauper.

If you look at the only sociological indicator that matters, the percentage of the population in poverty, both the number and percentage of those who are poor are increasing:

In fact, the census bureau indicates that 42.7% of Americans are below the poverty line.

As for average people, they are at the poverty level but not experiencing it because of retirement and disability.
