New research by Australian scientists has shown that whale numbers near the surface of some oceans have risen by hundreds of per cent in the past 50 years, and may be pushing baitfish deeper than usual.

The research found that species such as squid and tunas were sometimes being found in depths of up to 830 metres, which is close to the deepest known commercial fisheries.

In some cases, whale numbers have increased by more than 200 per cent in some regions.
