A fire inside a garage forced a man and his dog out of a home last month. They decided to take matters into their own hands, so they set the home ablaze as payback.

Devastating fire

“I lost everything,” the homeowner said.

The house was built in 1918, and the home’s owner, 66-year-old Thomas Griswold, purchased the property in the 1980s. The home had been sitting vacant for about a decade.

At some point in the past decade, the garage caught fire. The family thought it was a fire that started in the driveway. It burned for a week before firefighters finally put it out, said Battalion Chief Ken Marley of the Placentia Fire Department.

“It was devastating,” the homeowner said.

The fire also claimed the home’s neighbors.

“That house just caught fire and they lost it,” Marley said.

Griswold, who has owned the home since the 1970s, said that he has been trying to sell it for the past decade, but he couldn’t find a buyer.

“I’ve had a lot of interest in the last five years or so,” he said.

Fire destroys house, home

Griswold and his family had used the garage for storage and to park vehicles.

“I was in the house when it caught fire,” he said. “I was burning some trash in the garage and as I was leaving the garage I heard the fire. I went inside the house to look for my wife and children. It was too late. I only lost my dog.”

When he returned home after the fire, he found two more fires.

“I was trying to save the car,” Griswold said.

“I know they told me to get out and put the fire out myself, but I didn’t have the time. I have to fix the house first.”

Marley said the fire burned for about a week before firefighters were able to extinguish it.

“They were able to contain the fire,” he said. “I was happy that no one was hurt.”

Marley said firefighters found three cars and four fire trucks at the home.

“I can’t say what damage the fire did to the house, but the garage is gone,”
